Ford injected a muscle-car image into the Mustang by adding the Mach 1 to the model lineup for 1969. It was hugely successful with more than 72,000 sold; with the market saturated, second-year sales dropped to just under 42,000. Of those 1970 Mach 1s, only 2,501 were powered by the Shaker-scooped 428 Cobra Jet big-block. This blue example is verified as a factory Ram Air by the R-code VIN, as shown on the window sticker and Marti Report. Originally delivered to Bill Rutlard Ford in Memphis, Tennessee, in June of 1970, the Mach 1 spent much of its life in Texas and retains its original sheet metal. A rotisserie restoration was completed in 2017 to factory specifications, including a red oxide undercarriage with factory-correct overspray, paint daubs, date-coded emissions system and use of NOS parts when available.
For 1970, Ford mildly restyled the Mustang and updated the Mach 1 SportsRoof with grille-mounted fog lamps, hood scoop and stripes, twist-style external hood locks, aluminum rocker panels and oval dual exhaust tips. Factory equipment also included the Competition Suspension and a unique deluxe interior with woodgrain and console. According to the Marti Report, this Mach 1 is a one-of-one with its combination of 335 HP 428 Cobra Jet with Shaker, Medium Bright Blue Metallic paint, white interior and optional equipment, which includes a C6 automatic transmission, 3.00:1 Traction-Lok differential, air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes with front discs, in-dash tachometer with trip odometer, fold-down rear seat and tinted glass. The Mach 1 is also equipped with the popular rear-window slats, rear-deck spoiler and Magnum 500 wheels with Goodyear Polyglas tires. It is one of 1,130 with the R-code engine and automatic. The rare Mach 1 comes with its window sticker, framed Elite Marti Report and owner’s manual.
