A 1971 Mustang Mach 1 with the J-code 429 Cobra Jet is a rarity and special in its own right. This one goes a step beyond as a super-rare export model that was originally delivered new to Japan. As such, the Mach 1 is equipped with a metric speedometer and export sticker. The muscular Mustang was imported back into the U.S. in 1984 by Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Charles Nagy Jr. The original two-page invoice (an interesting factory document that has special credits and no prices listed) shows that the Yellow Gold Metallic Mach 1 is loaded with 22 options, starting with the 429/370 HP Cobra Jet with functional ram-air through the twin NACA hood scoops and including C6 Cruise-O-Matic transmission, air conditioning, front and rear spoilers, power steering and brakes, and Magnum 500 wheels. The extra-cost Ginger Mach 1 Sports interior came with upgraded seat upholstery, deluxe door panels and woodgrain trim, but the buyer also ordered power windows, a rim-blow steering wheel, tilt steering column, AM/8-track stereo, three-gauge instrumentation package, console with clock, fold-down rear seat and rear-window defroster. As a Mach 1, the SportsRoof is also equipped with Competition Suspension and muscle car visuals like hood blackout and twist locks, driving lamps, a honeycomb rear panel and chrome exhaust tips. The 1971 Mustang was the first year for a new, larger body style and the last year for big-block engine availability. According to the Marti Report, only 1,865 1971 Mustangs were ordered with the 429. Of those, just 894 came with the J-code 429 CJ and automatic transmission. Still equipped with its matching-numbers J-code 429, this Japanese export Mach 1 comes with its invoice, Marti Report, original registration card and bill of lading from Japan. According to the 429 Cobra Jet Registry, only 11 cars were built to the same specifications.
